Three Lessons from Goldilocks
by Jimmy Chen

Is the porridge too hot? Too cold? Or just right?

I don’t really care. I just know that Goldilocks is pretty darn smart.

Lesson 1: Taking Risks and Taking Initiative
She was lost in the woods somewhere and she needed food and rest. She had to weigh her options – either continue straight home before it gets dark, or make short pitstop into the unknown. What does she do? She breaks into the three bears’ house. That takes balls. Like entrepreneurship, uncertainty is high. She didn’t know bears lived in the house, but she took the initiative anyways because there was an opportunity and its doors were wide open, like literally!

Lesson 2: Pivoting
Whilst in the house, she tries the porridge, the chairs, and the beds until she found the one that fit her just right. Entrepreneurship is rarely about having a solid business plan and executing it perfectly. Often, the successful startups are ones that pivot around the original idea. They change their plans because they find out the original idea was not the one users needed. In fact, pivoting is a very good way to deal with uncertainty. That’s how Goldilocks was able find the things that were just right for her.

Lesson 3: Little Bit of Luck
After sleeping the bed that was “just right,” Goldilocks leaves. The bears come back and they scream in horror at their eaten porridge, broken chairs, and ruffled beds. Even when she found the things that were “just right,” they were just right for the moment. She still realized that her long-term goal was to get home. Goldilocks fully took advantage of the bears’ inability to lock the door to their house, but when it was time to leave, she left. She was lucky that she wasn’t eaten by the bears.

Watch out! Word/Play: BRIGHT

Word/Play’s most recent installment challenged our sweet members to play on the word “BRIGHT.” I personally opted to pay homage to the LiteBrite but major props to Ashley’s “Life through the eyes of an Insufferable Hipster.”

If you’d like to join our silly little family of Thursday creatives, hit the “Sick.” button at www.playonword.com

TOM yawns.

TOM
So, what happened while I was gone?

He sees the box trapped in the circle of salt.

TOM
Oh, damn it to hell. Brent’s still alive?

AMANDA and SUSAN both point their fingers at each other.

BOTH
Her fault.

They look at each other.

BOTH
You bitch.

TOM
I was all puckish and everything. Oh well. Okay, so how do we get the box out of the circle? I can’t touch it.

AMANDA
Neither can I.

SUSAN
Me three.

TOM
So, do we get Brent to take it out for us?

AMANDA
Susan could ask him.

TOM
You mean, Susan could force him.

AMANDA
I mean, Susan could threaten celibacy.

SUSAN
Excuse me, me and my lady parts are right here.

TOM
So what?

SUSAN
Well, we would appreciate it if you would talk to us, instead of talking as if we’re not here.

AMANDA
Hey, wait a minute. Tom, you can’t cross the salt?

TOM gives SUSAN a look.

TOM
Not since the fairy incident.

AMANDA
Man, one day, woman, you’re gonna have to explain this fairy incident to me.

SUSAN
TOM!!!

TOM
What? It’s not my fault.

SUSAN looks at AMANDA grumpily.

SUSAN
Okay fine. This is what happened.

SUSAN folds her arms and sits on the floor next to the box, still
trapped in the salt circle.

AMANDA
Go on.

The next morning, AMANDA and SUSAN walk in to find BRENT eating breakfast. The box is on the floor, trapped in a circle of salt.

BRENT
Good morning ladies.

SUSAN
(whining)
Dammit Brent, how’d you figure it out? I’m hungry!

AMANDA sits next to BRENT and leans whisper into his ear.

AMANDA
(whispering)
Yes Brent. How DID you figure it out? You’re not usually this smart.

SUSAN slumps against the wall and folds her arms in a sulk. BRENT smiles coldly at AMANDA.

BRENT
Well, you WITCH. The last time you tried to wake me up, you had a zombie hide in my bed. Another time Tom attacked me with his pants down and his wand up. Then there was the fairy incident, which I shall not mention so as to not embarrass Susan here. I don’t trust you three, I never have. I just live here.

SUSAN
Brent! You swore you’d never tell!

BRENT
Shut up, I didn’t tell.

SUSAN
Brent!

BRENT
Oh my gods, shut up.

BRENT finishes his breakfast, fixes his tie, kisses SUSAN on the cheek.

BRENT
I’m going to work.

SUSAN
Bye honey.

BRENT leaves. SUSAN leaves the floor and takes his chair. AMANDA pats SUSAN on the head.

AMANDA
You know you have a really fucked up relationship, right?

SUSAN purrs and nuzzles AMANDA’S shoulder. AMANDA looks away and sighs.

AMANDA
Do you want to summon Tom, or shall I? He needs to know that Brent knows.

SUSAN
I can’t. I’m having my period.

AMANDA
Dammit to hell, Sue, you were supposed to have that fixed by now.

SUSAN
I’m sorry, I forgot.

AMANDA
Give me your blood.

SUSAN mutters under her breathe, unhappy. But she reaches under her pants and tugs with one hand, which she then shakes AMANDA’S hand with.

AMANDA
Don’t give me attitude, missy.

AMANDA draws a symbol onto the table and than slams her palm over it. TOM stumbles into the room, sleepwalking. He takes a long time. Finally, he stands next to AMANDA. She stands up, examines his face, and them slaps him across the cheek, hard.

TOM
Oh. Morning.

-fin.
